I run for...a running streak!

19 days down and 81 (or more!) to go. In the last 19 days, I've logged 40 miles. I know that I talked about my running streak in my previous blog post but I wanted to really highlight what I have learned so far during this journey.

1. First and most importantly, it's not hard! I have been pleasantly surprised at how easy it has been for me to run every day. Which means that if I can do it, so can you! As a beginner runner, it might be great motivation for you to see how many days you can make it in a row. As a more seasoned/advanced runner, it can certainly make things interesting again. Try it! I challenge each and every one of you to start your own running streak. Maybe we could even make this a competition. That would certainly push me to reach my goal as well.

2. Okay, so I know I just said that this was easy but some days it's a struggle to get in that run. The point is that I always do it and I'm better for it. On the days when I'm tired or sick or sore (or enter any other number of excuses) I promise myself to just go out for a mile. Some days I only do the mile but I do it and like I said, I'm better for it. I STILL have never ever never ever never ever regretted going out for a run.

3. Yes, some days I only do the mile but I often do more than that. This has continued to improve my confidence as a runner. It makes me realize I am much more capable than I think I am. That's true for you too! Don't doubt yourself. If you think you can't run a mile, try and you'll find out but you'll never know unless you try.

4. Running every day improves my running. Duh. My breathing has improved. My form has improved. My pace has increased. I can feel myself getting stronger every day. I'm listening to my body more. Mentally I am stronger. I'm really hoping that this will continue to fine tune my running so that I'm at my best for race season.

5. I have more time for productive tasks. This sounds counterintuitive right? If I'm running more, how do I have more time? But what I've learned is that before I wasn't really making the most out of my time. I was usually watching tv or something equally as lazy. Now I run and then I have more energy to...make my meals, clean house, play with my son, walk the dog, enjoy my other hobbies. Honestly, I feel more fulfilled and less stressed. Who would've thought?

I'm sure there will be more to come as I continue this journey. I'm really excited to reach the one month mark and I may just have to do something to reward myself at this juncture.

As a final note, my "race season" is starting to come more plainly into view. I will be participating in a 4 person marathon relay with my cousins and my youngest sister in April. It's the Christie Clinic Illinois Marathon in Champaign. Something different for me and I get to introduce my family to the wonderful world of running. I'm very excited about it. I think my team is not really sure. Haha.

The big hoorah this year will be my 1st ultra marathon. I have scouted out several across the country. I've considered time of year, course difficulty, and travel time in my decision. I've officially landed on the Table Rock Ultra in Morganton, TN. The race will be in September...specific date still has to be approved by the United States Forest Service. The Ultra has a 50K and 50 miler. Due to the difficulty of the course and the fact that I am a first-time ultra runner, I've opted for the 50K so that's just a little over 30 miles. I'm nervous but I have no doubt that I can do this. I'm very excited to push myself beyond my limits. Anyone reading this is welcome to join!! I would love a training and race partner.

That's all for now. I will certainly keep you updated throughout the year on my new endeavors. In the meantime, happy running!
Amanda
